TWICKENHAM CYCLING CLUB BACKGROUND The Twickenham Cycling Club is heralded as 'the oldest club in Twickenham' and when formed in 1893 the club was 'founded with the primary object of promoting both social and competitive events'. This objective is as true today as it was then, but cycling has come a long way in 109 years and the execution of the objective is perhaps somewhat different! With a highly motivated, knowledgeable and enthusiastic Management, Members can expect the help they need to further their aspirations. One of the experiences of the Club was to send a team at the Irish RAS in 1999, but help is at hand not just for the Elite and 1st Cat’s of the club, but for all ability riders, male and female, young or not so young! The Club has an active membership that participates in many cycling disciplines, including events at local and national level. The Club also has a strong annual promotional diary that includes promoting events at national level, the running of several Surrey League events and organising the Hillingdon Cycle Circuit Winter Series. The Club also participates and helps run, during the summer, ‘Inter-Club’ evening ‘10’ Time Trials – friendly promotions with other local clubs. More recently the Club has been involved in promoting the Bike Fun Day during Twickenham Festival which was held at Marble Hill Park and included Grass Track Racing, Go Ride Activities and Bike Doctor providing information for people on cycling activities in the area. In the Club’s history, it can boast members and ex members that have been national, international and world champions, including in recent years, Dave Nie and Spencer Smith. The Club’s eldest active member, Ken Ryall, celebrates 70 continuous years with the Club, having joined in 1933. Ken remembers with pride some of the positions he held in cycling including being England Team Manager in 1959, for the tour of Sweden and 1st Team Driver for the Tour de France in 1967. During the early 1960’s Doug Collins was picked for several International events. Like all institutions, membership has seen its highs and at lows - but because the Club has always has a handful of people ready and willing to work hard for the sake of the Club and the sport, it has meant that today the Club’s membership is over a hundred strong. |
