‘Strictly Cycling’ - More People on Bikes More Often

Twickenham Cycling Club (TCC) in partnership with London Borough of Richmond (LBRuT) has developed a programme of coaching sessions, grass track and cyclo-cross cycling competitions and participation events which will take place across the borough during 2011 and 2012.

There are three borough schools identified for the first year of the programme; Orleans Park, Teddington and Waldegrave. The first series of sessions focuses on grass track cycling and British Cycling will run three sessions per school during school time in March, April and May. Coaches from TCC will run after-school sessions and Community & Club sessions in Kneller Gardens in May and June.

Each school is hosting an open grass track event under British Cycling regulations fielding a school team at all three events with a grand final taking place in June during Bike Fest. These events will also provide opportunities to watch expert riders racing and for any rider, young or old, school pupil or borough resident, to take part in novice races.

In April/May the cycling trials will take place for the Richmond London Youth Games Cycling Team. Selected pupils from the school cycling clubs and those who performed well at the grass track competition will be invited to trials at Hillingdon Cycle Circuit in preparation for the event on Saturday 2nd July.

In June Bike Fest provides opportunities for everyone to have a go at grass track racing and sprinting, to get a free bike safety check and some tips on bike maintenance from the Bike Doctor and to get information on all aspects of cycling including safe cycle routes and smarter travel. With the exception of the ‘official’ grass track competition all races will be free to enter.

The Cyclo-Sportive is provisionally scheduled for Sunday 24th July and will follow the route of the Olympic Road Race through Twickenham and out to Box Hill, a route of approximately 60 miles.

During September 2011 schools sessions start again following a similar pattern to the spring but with a focus on urban and cyclo-cross skills. There will be opportunities for the school teams to take part in the British Cycling Central Region Cyclo-Cross League events between September and December every year.
