46th Perfs Pedal Race - Staple Cross Circuit - 13/02/11

Perfs Pedal is the first big road race of the UK racing calendar. This years race saw Tour de France stage winner and Paris Roubaix winner Magnus Backstedt make his come back to racing. Twickenham's own Declan Higgins did a brilliant ride to finish the 45 mile race in what was a class field.

A frustrated Clem Halpin's view of the race:

11th Feb, 4th cat race. Bright fresh day with a fairly strong west wind blowing, much easier conditions than the previous saturday. Much larger field this week, riders encouraged by the weather and the last chance to score points in this years winter series. We set off at a fast yet managable pace, it soon become apparent from the braking (and the swearing) we had several new racers in the group. I tried to stay towards the front to avoid trouble but it was quite a confused race, with no real rhythm, several riders attempted breaks but no-one got away (I thought!). With 5 laps to go after chasing down a break by a London Phoenix rider I found myself at the back of the group on the long straight, hemmed in by a 3rd cat rider who was having a bad day. I decided to drop back and then ride around the group to get back towards the front. I managed to move back up the field over the remaining laps, on the final run along the back straight I took advantage of a gap caused by a rider switching suddenly to regain contact with the 1st third of the group coming into the uphill finish. The sprint seemed to go well and I was concious of moving up a few more places to cross the line in ........11th, bollox!!. Thought I had made top ten but there was a solo break off the front.

Daniel Skinner again rode a really strong race. I only realised after talking to Daniels dad before the race that as a junior his gearing is restricted to protect his legs. I'm sure Daniel would have finished higher in the sprint finishes that we generally get at Hillingdon otherwise.
