The TCC TTT B team streaks around Silverstone motor racing circuit.

 Well done everyone.
It was quite an achievement in itself getting 3 teams out of London on a friday evening and up the 80 miles to Silverstone.
We had great weather, but it was quite a rush getting registered, changed and ready by 7.30, let alone having a warm up.
35 teams turned up in total, including really strong outfits from Corley Cycles (winners of the Men’s race in 23:21, about 8 seconds ahead of High Wycombe ( I think).
It was extremely tough, and a single lap of the 4 mile circuit was not enough warm up for most teams, so hitting the track at the start and rushing straight up to maximum effort was a tall order.
TCC B (team 22 on the results list photo on Flickr) went off first from our teams, about 4 mins ahead of Team A and the Girls about another 6 mins after that.
Team A’s pace was immediately high, too high for half of the squad, and it was a bit chaotic to say the least. Our first lap was about 8:05 and we lost 3 riders at the end of the first lap. Overtaking another team, Graeme, Mo and I  got separated and fell off the back by about 5-10 metres and never got back on. At 28-30 mph it was impossible to bridge the gap and with everyone giving total effort its difficult to spot the problem till its too late.
By the time the remaining 6 had realised, the gap had grown to about 200 metres and the best plans were in tatters!
Mike was next to feel the heat and then Gavin, leaving only 4 riders still in the group. Not enough to get a finish time. Ed, Alex T, Alex W and Mark rode on, but realising the need to have 5 to finish, held back and reformed with Gavin. Courageous turns by Ed especially, and great effort by the 5 to complete 1 1/2 more laps and post a respectable 25:37, good enough for 21st out of 35 I think.
To put it into perspective, a squad from another club did lap one in about the same time 8:09 (TCC A – Team 20 on the list did 8:05) and finished with an overall time of 24:19, so about a minute quicker. Moral seems to be: Set a sensible pace and build it as the race develops. Next year!
Team B did a much better job holding the squad together by all accounts. Laps of 8:37, 8:42 and 8:38 gave them a commendable 25:37. making them 24th I think.
Ben struggled with 3 gears misbehaving, but battled on as long as his legs would let him before dropping off, but great to see 6 I think crossing the line together…or nearly. I think a few of them thought the finish was earlier than it actually was, but great ride, and credit to Christos, Jason and the rest of the team for cajoling and cursing their way around the circuit.
The Girls Team looked impressive on the warm up, and posted laps of 9:59, 9:52 and 9:50 in the race proper, so increasing tempo all the time. Heather and Pen did their bit, and the big engines of Sol, Emma, Holly, Lisa, Clare powered on helped by Naveen and Kay.
I videoed the warm up lap:
we pass the Girls about half way round. I sped it up a bit, and actually looks more how it felt.
Big thanks to Reserve Rider Extraordinaire Angus who took some great shots of the actual race with my camera. Many thanks for his support and help
Great to see Mac in the Pit Lane dispensing his usual know how and experience. I noticed a slight “told you so” glint in his eye as those of us who got dropped wobbled back into the pit lane looking sheepish!
It was a great experience, and we should aim to do more of these 4 up or 2 up time trials in the future. We have some really strong riders. If we can team them up well  we can do the club proud. Lets aim to have some teams out for the 4 man Surrey TT on September 8th. Last year we put a couple of teams in and it was great.
Let me or Darren know if you’re interested.
One of the craziest friday nights that i’ve had in a long time, but worth it.
Go Twickenham!
